Understanding the Shopping List

The Shopping List is one of SavvyChef's most powerful time-saving features. It automatically generates based on your meal plan, intelligently combining duplicate ingredients and accounting for items you already have in your inventory. No more manual list writing or forgetting ingredients at the store!

What You'll See

  • Ingredients automatically organized by category (Produce, Dairy, Meat, Pantry, etc.)
  • Checkboxes to mark items as you shop
  • Clean, easy-to-read list of everything you need for your meal plan

Smart Features

  • Automatic Combining: If multiple recipes need the same ingredient, they are automatically merged into one line item
  • Inventory Integration: Items you already have in your pantry are automatically excluded from the list
  • Real-time Updates: Add or remove recipes from your meal plan and watch the shopping list update instantly
  • Smart Merge Suggestions: Get intelligent suggestions for ingredient substitutions to save money

Using the Shopping List

The shopping list is designed to be your perfect companion while grocery shopping. Here's everything you need to know about managing and customizing your list.

Checking Off Items

  1. As you shop, tap the checkbox next to any ingredient you've placed in your cart
  2. Checked items automatically move to the bottom of the list, keeping your focus on what's left to find
  3. Checked items remain visible but are marked as complete with a strikethrough
  4. Accidentally checked something? Just tap again to uncheck it

Adding Custom Items

Need to add items that aren't part of any recipe? No problem!

  1. Enter edit mode by tapping Edit
  2. Tap Add Item at the bottom of the list
  3. Enter the item name and quantity
  4. Select the appropriate category (Produce, Dairy, etc.)
  5. Tap Save to add it to your list

Smart Merge Feature: Save Money & Reduce Waste

One of SavvyChef's most powerful money-saving features is its intelligent ingredient merging system. The shopping list automatically merges duplicate ingredients, but the Smart Merge feature goes even further by suggesting similar ingredient substitutions to help you save money.

How Smart Merge Works

While the shopping list automatically combines duplicate ingredients by default, Smart Merge takes it a step further by intelligently suggesting substitutions for similar ingredients:

  • Identifies similar ingredients that could be substituted (e.g., onions and shallots, white bread and brown bread)
  • Suggests combining these similar items to reduce your shopping list and save money
  • Prompts you to review and accept or reject each suggested merge
  • Remembers your accepted merges for future shopping lists (can be cleared at any time)

Important: Because ingredient substitutions can impact the flavor of a recipe, Smart Merge suggestions are not applied automatically. You have full control to accept or reject each suggestion based on your preferences.

Best Practices

Tips for best results

Check Your Pantry Before Shopping

Before heading to the store, quickly review your pantry and update your inventory in the app. This ensures your shopping list automatically excludes items you already have, preventing duplicate purchases and saving money.

Update Inventory After Shopping

After shopping, tap the option to "Add all ingredients to pantry" in your meal plan settings. This bulk updates your inventory with everything you just bought, making future shopping lists even more accurate.

Leverage Smart Merging for Bulk Savings

When the smart merge feature combines ingredients across recipes, use this as an opportunity to buy in bulk at better prices. For example, if you need 4 lbs of chicken across multiple meals, buy a larger family pack instead of individual portions.

Navigate by Category In-Store

Items are grouped by category (Produce, Dairy, Meat, etc.) to match how most grocery stores are organized. Start in one section and work your way through the store systematically, checking off items as you go.
